Impossibility

For most people, putting a square peg in a round hole is an IMPOSSIBILITY... but not for SocMo!

Once again, I am experimenting with Photoshop color while doing something for Illustration Friday. This time I scanned a pencil sketch and colored it with my old Wacom tablet. My first attempt at color didn't turn out very good, so I made another layer and tried again. No attempt was made to make this a finished, slick piece. It's pretty rough, but I got to mess around with some settings on brushes and tried a texture or two... which didn't make the cut. I think I kinda miss my usual heavy black line...

Good morning
6:20 a.m. a mile from Bron's house. Friend of bron's who is also trying to develop Photoshop further . Your adventures in color looks great, would like to see more. Looks rather finished, think you should go for it. Look like a finished piece on my computer screen. I think Socmo should go for it in this new director of a more colorful world.

Hey Doug! Nice work! The first thing that popped in my head for impossibility was....the square peg in the round hole...but I couldn't visualize how to do it. You did it! Nice!

What a great idea! Your action in the illustration is composed well and so is the type.

Hurray! You're painting! I hope you keep at it. I think you'll find it real rewarding. After you push the lights and darks and textures, you may find yourself erasing the line because it is no longer necessary. It works that way with me.

Ooh! Interesting direction you're taking things here, experimentally speaking. I think you're just so used to the heavy black line, it's hard to see something like this as "finished". Something I do if I feel that way is double the layer the line art is laying on, which darkens and thickens the line. Then I can keep doing that until I get the desired line affect. Not sure if you have the line on a separate layer, though, to try that.

Oh...Great concept, too!

hi Doug,
just want to thank you for the colouring lineart tutorial you did awhile back. Just one question.
you mentioned you scanned the drawing in black/white mode (aliased) then changed it to rgb.
was the black line art always aliased (hand edged) as you made selections and coloured it?
cheers
Eddy

Eddie... sorry I have not answered your question till now but YES. I keep everything in anti-aliased mode including some tools like the paint bucket.
